Sabah Day 4: Sandakan - Sepilok - Sandakan

On day 4 we visited the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC). The long-distance bus stop is at the end of J. Pryer and time table can be obtained from the tourist information centre. We took the first bus at 9am and reached the Orang Utan Sanctuary in 45 minutes (RM4 each). Tickets were RM30 each and RM10 for each camera if you chose to bring one in. No bags, water or food were allowed within the centre and lockers were provided. The first feeding session was 10am but only one female orang utan carrying a baby came. Afterwards we watched a video to learn more about the animals and the rehab program.

Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre; the young orang utans really look as cute as they are in the photos!!

Unfortunately all the walking trails within the centre were closed for maintenance so we started walking to the RDC. That turned out to be a bad idea because they actually are quite far from each other (at least 30 min walk!) and the scorching sun did not help!
After buying tickets (RM10 each), we started exploring the centre. The canopy walkway and the high towers allow you to observe the rainforest from tree tops. We managed to spot some birds here and there too! We also went deeper in to the rainforest via the many walking trails.

Returning to the Orang Utan Centre was an easy taxi ride, which I HIGHLY recommend (RM10). At the second and last feeding session of the day at 3pm, we saw a lot more orang utans and monkeys!
An orangutan who followed us all the way to the feeding platform!

We took the same bus back to Sandakan (RM4) and had dinner at a different restaurant at the riverside.
